Tick Bites-Lyme Disease Prevention

Service Description

-Lyme disease is an infection that can be spread by ticks to humans. -Black legged ticks are the types of ticks that can carry the bacteria, but not every black legged tick will be infected. -Only ticks that are infected with these bacteria can spread the infection. -In order for an infected tick to pass on the infection to humans, the tick needs to have bitten the person. -If you were bitten by a black-legged tick within the last 72 hours and are not displaying serious symptoms, your pharmacist may be able to prescribe an antibiotic to help prevent Lyme disease from occurring. You may experience some of the symptoms below: -Lyme disease starts as a rash that often, although not always, looks like a bull’s eye or ring pattern. -A red lump present, but swelling, blistering, bruising, itching or other infections may develop -Mild allergic reaction (hives, rash, and light swelling at the bite site) -If left untreated, it can cause other serious symptoms such as fever, feeling weak, body aches, or nerve pain. -Pharmacists can now assess and prescribe medications to treat Tick Bites-Lyme Disease Prevention. -This is not to replace physicians, but it will help to reduce workload and wait times to see a doctor for major ailments. -This service is covered by OHIP = Ontario health card (Do not have a health card? There is a fee for that service). -Please book an appointment online. -Appointment options will be in person, virtually, over the phone. -Please note, registering for this service does not guarantee a prescription. -Your pharmacist will assess if they can prescribe a treatment option or if a referral to a physician may be necessary.
